Sky diving is one of those things that I always wanted to do since I found out about it. I am all for doing as many bucket list goals as I can set myself so that I can experience everything that life has to offer. My best friend knew this, and so for my 21st birthday present, he decided to take me sky diving!
It was absolutely amazing and I would encourage everyone to do it – even though I did throw up down myself mid-dive. That wasn’t a highlight I must admit, but you know, I cracked on. I just like to do things with a hint of “not normal”.
I want to tell you why I think you should do it too – even if you are completely crapping yourself at the thought!
1. It’s easier than you think
You are strapped to someone who actually knows what they are doing (I have trust issues so still wasn’t convinced but it is true), so you don’t have to! They only ask you to do one thing, and that is to be a banana when told.
Before you get thrown out of the plane against your will, they dangle you off the edge of the plane and ask you to arch backwards like a banana! Then, when you land, all you have to do is raise your legs up at a 90 degree angle. Make sure you do ab day often at the gym for that – that bit was bloody hard!
Other than that, your buddy does all of the hard work to ensure you both don’t die. That what I told myself, their fate is linked to yours. So naturally, they will want to be doing everything in their power to make sure you don’t fall to your death!
2. You feel like a total boss
Don’t get me wrong, I understand throwing yourself out of a plane 15,000 feet high is a very unnatural thing. But that’s exactly why you should do it.
You will be shitting yourself the whole time, no doubt about it. I also had my period to contend with, so I was convinced I was going to leak all over myself and my instructor somehow. Poor guy, he got dealt a bad hand with me as a partner and being covered in my bodily fluids. (in the end it was only the sick he got covered in, just to clarify)!
But when you land, you are so overwhelmed with pride! The feeling you get really doesn’t leave you!
3. You feel a sense of freedom and like you are untouchable
It is SO beautiful. Granted when the parachute was pulled all I could concentrate on was trying not to be sick (and failing miserably), but I did look at the world around me. You will be flying (falling with style) and you get to see the world from a whole new perspective.
I could see for miles, and the view truly was stunning. You literally feel on top of the world, and I remember in that moment how I viewed life a little differently. I realised my massive ‘problems’ were so insignificant up there.
4. You’re more likely to die in the plane on the way up
Your equipment is checked 50 million times, you wear the most ridiculous outfit and are always reminded how serious this shit is. Rightfully so, what normal human being does this for fun?!
But in terms of actual statistics, you are more likely to die from the plane crashing or malfunctioning. So in theory, you want to be jumping out of that bad boy as soon as humanely possible!
5. Your friends will think you are a proper bad arse
Everyone laughed at me because I chundered down myself, but they all acknowledged I was a brave little lady! It is something that is on a lot of people’s bucket list, and with good reason.
6. Think of the insta worthy pictures!
The photos / video footage you can get of yourself will be amazing. Granted they aren’t the best angle, but it is kinda hard to pose when you are falling and trying to pretend like you aren’t scared shitless!
Would I do it again? Absolutely not. Being sick hundreds of feet off the ground was really uncomfortable and my motion sickness is something I can’t really control! But, I tell everyone they should do it because it is something you NEED to experience at least once in your life!
I vlogged the whole day & got footage of me during the dive, so be sure to check that out here if you want to see how the day is structured!
