You post religiously, have decent looking photos and you just want to increase your Instagram following to break the 1,000 follower mark.

Instagram is one of those social media platforms that are extremely hard to grow (in my opinion anyway!). Although I don’t have thousands of followers, I have found a few tips which have helped me grow my following quite quickly so far!

Instagram is annoying me lately with all of the fake accounts, fake comments and this ridiculous follow / unfollow game, but I have been trying to persevere with it. Time and patience is your friend when it comes to making those Insta gains I think!

1. Like hundreds of pictures on your discover feed from people in your target audience

Research shows that for every 100 likes you dish out you will get around 6 new followers. Most of the time these will be real users who like similar feeds to you so too many shouldn’t unfollow assuming you keep your account ticking over nicely.

2. Hold a competition on Instagram, asking people to follow and regram to enter

As with any social media platform, people love free stuff! This is a good way to see a spike of an increase in followers, and if you capture their interest organically with your normal feed, they will stick around and engage with you from then onwards.

3. It may sound obvious, but actively promote your Instagram account on other social media accounts

Sometimes you just have to tell people what to do before they do it! I have a had a lot of cases where I will be engaging with people loads on Twitter only to discover we are not yet Insta buddies. Sometimes all it takes is chucking out a cheeky tweet twice a week to let people know you are alive & well on the gram!

4. Comment on other people’s photos

If your comments are interesting, active / legitimate users will check out your profile and most likely follow you. It also will encourage others to comment on your photos, which is all helpful in tackling Insta’s new algorithm.

5. Use popular hashtags so your images get found in search

The Tag for Likes app is really good for this, as it tells you the most popular tags used depending on the category you are going for.  Some of the most popular ones are #love, #instagood, #instalike and #photooftheday. Be wary not to post spammy hashtags though, as it can attract spammy accounts and nobody needs that!

6. Remember that quality beats quantity and most people prefer high quality & engaging photos over a “theme”

Having a theme and being able to upkeep it is something I will never be able to achieve! But, I recently saw a poll on Twitter and a fair few people voted that they preferred high quality images of whatever the poster felt like as opposed to it fitting a certain theme.

That being said, don’t stress too much if you can’t crack a theme because as long as you’re posting cracking photos, your Insta will grow!

7. That being said, be sure to post regularly

Providing regular content keeps you popping up on everyone’s news feeds & ensuring you stay relevant and current. Put yourself in people’s faces enough with decent pictures and they’ll be regularly engaging with you, which brings in more followers overtime too!

8. Have an interesting bio that gives a lot of information about what your account is all about

If you are a blogger, tell the world you are! People who love following blogger accounts will automatically want to explore your feed even more. If they like what they see, they may even go and visit your blog from there. That being said, make sure you include a link in your bio to your blog to make it easy to find for Insta users!

9. Make your account into a business account

In the spirit of making your blog/Insta a brand, operating as a business account makes it look like you mean business. I don’t have any proof that this helps at all, but from a personal perspective it always makes me consider whether to follow someone or not.

10. Ask questions in the captions of your photos

This will increase engagement as people will be more likely to comment in response, which again helps tackle the new algorithm!

11. Post on Sundays, as research suggests that the least amount of images are posted on a Sunday.

Therefore in theory, posting on a Sunday when there are less photos being uploaded it will increase your visibility! There is the flip side that not as many people will like your photos, but this Insta game is all swings and roundabouts!

12. Use geotagging

Adding a location to indicate where the photo was taken or where you are when uploading it will open your feed up to more local users who can follow you!

13. Follow your suggested users

Instagram does this part well, as I find it suggests users that are very similar to me and therefore good accounts for me to follow. I find that most people will follow me back from this too, so always worth checking who is out there!

14. Tag everyone who is relevant to the photo you are uploading

Tag the items of clothing you are wearing, where you got the items in your flatlay from & other relevant accounts. Sometimes your brand will repost your pic & this can bring in loads of new followers!

Let me know if any of these tips have helped you increase your Instagram following! Whilst I am on the topic, do you follow me yet? It would mean the world if you came and followed me on my little blogging journey!

Instagram is so tough and I find all the bots a nightmare – is it a real follow? Who knows! It’s really odd actually cos I find I get the best engagement on a Sunday, maybe that’s because of less uploads? I never knew that! Thank you for these amazing tips!

I am somehow managing to keep up an ongoing theme by matching filters; it does give your Instagram that “finished” look I think. I try to make my images high quality but I struggle to come up with what to photograph sometimes! For that reason, my consistency is not that great and I really need to work on that.
